Glucosamine may be one of the best long term options to support joint health. In a 3-year study, 212 participants with knee concerns were given a placebo or 1,500 mg a day of glucosamine sulfate. Different types of collagen are present in our bones, joints, tendons, ligaments and skin. The majority of our body’s collagen is composed of type 1 collagen. We use a special type 1 & 3 collagen made of small and easily digestible collagen peptides.*
In a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial, 94 participants aged 40-70 received 8g of Collagen type 1 & 3 or placebo daily for a period of 6 months. The collagen group had a statistically significant decrease in their WOMAC score by 22% and a 44% improvement of stiffness. WOMAC score is the international standard method for assessing joint health clinically in patients. The collagen group also resulted in a statistically significant increase of the Lysholm score (+4% after 3 months and +7% after 6 months). The Lysholm score is linked to improved knee movements in everyday activities.*27
Besides supporting joint health, collagen peptides can support skin health as well. In a randomized, placebo controlled, double-blind clinical trial, 106 women aged 40-65 received 10g of collagen type 1 & 3 or placebo per day for a period of three months. The collagen group significantly decreased the fragmentation of collagen in the deep skin layer called the dermis (by 18% after one month and as much as 31% after 3 months). It also increased the density of collagen in the dermis by 9% after only one month. In another study, 10g of collagen daily was shown to increase skin hydration by as much as 28% after 8 weeks.
In an ex vivo study, Collagen dose dependently increased the amount of moisturizing hyaluronic acid present in the epidermis (outer layer of skin).*28

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a convenient source of sulfur that's essential to strong cartilage and other joint tissue. It is required to maintain the structure of proteins, collagen and keratin in the body — the building block of nails, skin, hair, joints and other connective tissues. OptiMSM® has been used in multiple studies that resulted in decreases in exercise-induced muscle and joint discomfort, as well as post-exercise inflammation, and protection of the cartilage matrix in joints.*18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24
MSM in combination with glucosamine sulfate has even better results for joints. In a 12-week clinical trial, 118 people took either 1,500 mg of glucosamine sulfate, 1,500 mg of MSM or both. Substantial improvements were made in the first two groups, but twice the level of improvement was achieved by the combination group.*25
Besides supporting joints, OptiMSM® may support healthy skin as well. In one study, 20 women took either 3g of MSM or a placebo for 16 weeks. The MSM group had significant improvements in skin appearance and condition.*26

In the most recent one, 72 people were administered a placebo or 225 mg a day of hyaluronic acid for the first two weeks and 150 mg for the next two weeks. After only 2 weeks, joint comfort was significantly improved in the HA group compared to baseline, while the placebo group reported no change.*30

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled clinical study it was found that ingested hyaluronic acid increased skin moisture and improved treatment outcomes for patients with dry skin.*31

Hyaluronic acid is a member of the family of molecules known as glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). This family also includes chondroitin sulfate and some other large carbohydrate-containing molecules. It is present in every connective tissue and organ such as skin, synovial fluid, blood vessels, serum, brain, cartilage, heart valves, and the umbilical cord. In particular, synovial fluid has the highest concentration of HA anywhere in the body. Hyaluronic acid is a major ingredient of the synovial fluid that lubricates and cushions joints as well as the vitreous humor that fills the inner chamber of the eye. There have been multiple studies evaluating oral HA and joint health between 2008 and 2015, with most focusing on the knee.*29

Vitamin C is one of the most well known and researched antioxidants, providing widespread benefits to your body. It helps us combat continuous exposure to free radicals that would otherwise degrade our health over time. Chondrocytes (the cells found in healthy cartilage) are potent sources of reactive oxygen species, which can damage collagen in cartilage and hyaluronic acid in the synovial fluid. 32, 33, 34, 35 Vitamin C may help protect against these reactive oxygen species.*
In a longitudinal cohort study, risk factors for joint issues were three times higher in those who were in the lowest tertile of vitamin C intake. Persons in the highest tertile of vitamin C intake were the most likely to report knee comfort during the course of the study.*36
Vitamin C is also important for skin health, and goes hand in hand with the collagen in ArthFree®. It is crucial to the maintenance of a normal collagen network in humans by preventing the inactivation of two key enzymes engaged in collagen biosynthesis (lysyl and prolyl hyroxylase). In one study, Vitamin C induced a dose-dependent increase in collagen type 1 deposits by normal human fibroblasts. It could therefore support the maintenance of optimal collagen density in the dermis.*37
